What do you use Excel for; creating spreadsheets, graphs, charts and all? Microsoft Excel is used by people in various ways. But can you imagine a video created in Microsoft Excel? The video for the song “Rock and Roll Train” by the legendary Rock Band AC/DC was created entirely in Microsoft Excel.

Phil Clandillon and Steve Milbourne at Sony Music Creative in London handle creative projects to promote Musicians. Realizing that the band has typically male fans who work around the clock on their computers in Office environments and try to escape the stress by listening to bands like AC/DC, they reflected upon an idea to create a music video in Microsoft Excel. Then they planned to create a music video for AC/DC’s “Rock and Roll Train” in Microsoft Excel workbook, which could then be emailed to cubicles around the world. As Excel files aren’t blocked by firewalls, and people could open it right in their offices.

Then they rendered the entire video frames as ASCII text through some image to ASCII generator, and then used Visual Basic to animate it at 12 frames per second. The Excel file with the AC/DC music video was actually created by a developer in Bulgaria and he also embedded the audio into it. The video was ready for somewhere around 300 British pounds.

This “Rock and Roll Train” video by AC/DC has received nearly 2 million views on Youtube and more than a million people have downloaded the Excel file. You can download it here. The video then got viral as people started mailing the Excel file it to their friends around the world.
