If you are using a network the featured image meta box is NOT activated by default. You have to go to your network settings and half way down there is a uploads settings section. There you have to tick the select boxes for images and video etc.
Once you save that and go to your site then the featured image meta box appears. It seems a bit stupid not to have it set by default. There is also a way to have many of the meta boxes open by default so if you always use them this could be useful
see
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/extra-fields-dissapeared-in-new-post  to add a function to your function.php page ..
Hope this helps someone from wasting the time that I did ….

once done, you won’t have to do it again and again. It is saved in settings
automatically. Maybe you are using Google Chrome. The screen options thing
has an issue with Google Chrome. Try doing it on Firefox.

Yes, I realise this – but is there some way of always enabling it, since I always use it? Right now, to show either screen options or excerpt (or any of the other fields not hidden before), it is a matter of

1) Click on Screen Options to open “Show on Screen”

2) Tick both Excerpt and Custom Fields

3) Then go down to Excerpt and Custom Fields to edit each

4) AFAIK in the previous versions these were always visible – is there a way to keep them visible 24/7, instead of having to go through the steps above?

It’s not a hassle when you only have to edit two or three posts, but when you have quite a few, it does tend to become laborious.

excerpts can also be shown from the screen options. Could you be clearer?

Am I missing something, or is there a way to always show some of the missing fields (in my case, I *always* use excerpt and custom fields.).

A bit tedious to repeatedly click on “Screen options”, tick them to enable them, etc…..

Thank you for posting this simple thing as there were lots of forum where people were asking to add something either in functions.php or install a plugin for this.

You’re welcome. Actually there are a lot of things that need to be
configured in the latest version of wordpress. 🙂

Its not an issue with your operating system. If you are using chrome, it is
highly likely that you don’t see the screen options.

For some reason I don’t have the “Screen Options” button at the upper right of the screen. I’m using a Mac. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,

OK. It would be easier to do by using the native function of wordpress. You too have a nice day.

Could it be that my theme is not compatible with 3.1 for those options?

Weird and disconcerting… I downgraded to 3.05… and can’t see how I could upgrade anytime soon…

How are you adding thumbnails to your posts? by using a wordpress plugin or using the native function of WordPress. If you are using a plugin, its highly likely that the plugin isn’t compatible with the latest version of WordPress i.e. 3.1. But you can use the function available on wordpress to show the thumbnails. Maybe its not with the screen options.

Here is how you do it.

In order to do this, you need to copy and paste the following code in your theme’s functions.php.

add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’ );
set_post_thumbnail_size( 200, 200, true ); // Normal post thumbnails
add_image_size( ‘single-post-thumbnail’, 400, 9999 ); // Permalink thumbnail size

After you have added the above code to your functions.php file, you can add this to the index.php and single.php files if you want. This requires inserting a code into the layout to call the thumbnail into the post.

Once you do this, you need to adding into your style sheet some CSS. For example:

.attachment-post-thumbnail {
float:left;
margin:5px;
}
