The Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of the best smartphones on the market right now, even with the emergence of the Nexus 4 and HTC Droid DNA coming out in recent weeks.

And with a name starting with “Galaxy S3,” you’d assume that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini would be just as great, except, you know, mini.

That is not the case at all. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say that the Galaxy S3 Mini is the biggest ripoff and flop since who knows when; perhaps even since forever!

It’s not even the fact that the screen is smaller, it’s that fact that what you’re getting for $419 is really not even competitive. It makes you wonder what Samsung was even thinking when releasing such an antiquated device that would have been good two years ago, but not now.

For $419, here’s what you get in the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini:

  • 4.0-inch 480 x 800 resolution Super AMOLED display with a ppi of 233
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • Up to 32 GB of internal storage
  • 5 MP camera
  • Dual-core 1 GHz processor
  • Android 4.1
  • 1,500 mAh battery

Just plain awful. One could only guess that Samsung is riding the coattails of its super successful S3 to try and boost sales for the S3 Mini, because with another name, it wouldn’t even be in the discussion.

Just for comparison, here’s what you get for $299 in the Nexus 4:

  • 4.7-inch 768 x 1280 resolution True IPS display with a 318 ppi
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • Android 4.2
  • Quad-core 1.5 GHz S4 Pro processor
  • Up to 16 GB of internal storage
  • 8 mp camera
  • 2,100 mAh battery

See where I’m coming from? For over $100 less, you get a far superior phone in the Nexus 4. Stay far away from the S3 Mini. It’s one of the worst smartphones of the year, at a ripoff price.
