OLPC cuts down Workforce by 50%

The One Laptop Per Child project announced that it is cutting its workforce by 50%. It has also said that salaries for the remaining staff have been reduced. For the upcoming changes in the coming year, Nicholas Negroponte, founder of the group made an announcement in the company’s blog.

Like many other nonprofits that are facing tough economic times, One Laptop per Child must downsize in order to keep costs in line with fewer financial resources. Today weOLPC cuts down workforce are reducing our team by approximately 50% and there will be salary reductions for the remaining 32 people. While we are saddened by this development, we remain firmly committed to our mission of getting laptops to children in developing countries. We thank team members who are departing for their contributions to this important mission…

He further says that the technology initiatives will be focused on Development of Generation 2.0, Digital Books, No Cost Connectivity programs and so on. He says that the development of Sugar Operating System will be handed off to the open source community. Further he adds that the company will work on bringing the cost of laptops down to zero for least developed countries. He has also expressed his deep grief for being compelled to expel its hard-working employees.
