In July 2009, Twitter launched verified accounts. It was twitter’s move to establish the authenticity of accounts so that the users could be sure that the people they are following are legitimate. Right now there are around 4000 verified Twitter users. But the strange thing is that the owners of twitter themselves don’t prefer to have a verified accounts badge to their profiles.

About Verified accounts, Twitter says:

Any account with a Verified (verified account badge) is a verified account. Twitter is beta testing solutions to establish authenticity of well known accounts so users can trust that the accounts they follow are legitimate. When viewing verified accounts, Twitter users know that tweets coming from well known personalities, organizations, government agencies, and others on Twitter are the real thing!

twitter owners unverified accounts The owners and pioneers of Twitter Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, don’t have verified Twitter accounts. One can put an argument like, “Why would Bill Gates have to go telling everyone that Microsoft belongs to him when everyone knows about it?” This could be a similar thing. But still, there are so many people with the name Jack Dorsey on Twitter. What if someone misleadingly follows the wrong Jack Dorsey, or Evan Williams or Biz Stone? But all of them have millions of followers whatsoever.

verified twitter accountIt was announced that Twitter is soon going to launch verified accounts. It has been launched and you can see a “Verified Account” badge in the Twitter pages of many popular Twitterers. Well, everyone cannot use this feature as it is limited only to celebrities, musicians, organizations and other public agencies. You can see the twitter pages of Ashton Kutcher, mashable etc.

This is a Twitter’s initiative to let people know the authentic accounts of celebrities that are likely to be faked. Twitter says that though it is launching verified Twitter accounts, it doesn’t mean that, the owner is the one who is writing the updates. Till now, only a few celebrities and organizations have verified their twitter accounts, so it doesn’t mean that the ones without the “Verified Account” badge are not authentic. The verified accounts badge is the same for all accounts i.e. the colors don’t vary according to the customizations. You can also find the verified account icon(a blue tickmark) next to the image thumbnail while you do people search on Twitter.

Twitter has not yet planned to verify the accounts of businesses but if someone is interested, the feedback form is available here.

Twitter plans to launch more Twitter verified accounts in the future and now it is only testing it on a handful of popular Twitters. Even the Twitter owners do not have verified accounts yet. Many celebrities are sure to verify their accounts very soon.
