Microsoft recently gave its customers a preview of the forthcoming version of the Office productivity suite. Ever since this official announcement, Microsoft has been providing information about the features of the new Office 2013 and how they’ll work. It is pretty evident from all this that this time around Microsoft is laying great emphasis on cloud-based features. Prominence has also been given to the question of mobility in this age of portable devices. The imminent Microsoft Office 2013 will be using Microsoft SkyDrive for cloud storage where you can not only access your files but also save your settings and templates and take them with you, no matter where you go.

Microsoft Office cloud basedOffice 2013 promises a consistent profile for users across several devices, including smartphones and tablets. Users will be able to store their files in the cloud and access them in a multiple locations. According to Microsoft, internet connectivity should not be an obstacle to productivity and people should be able to work both online and offline. According to the partner group program manager in Office, John Jendrezak, this is the core idea behind connecting Office to the cloud.

By creating one profile using any current Microsoft account, users can avail storage of their files and personal preferences in the cloud and use them on any device that has Office installed on it. Customers will no longer have to worry if they are not finished with their work on a document or a presentation at the end of a work day. They can simply start off wherever they left it on their tablet or their Windows 8 smartphone. Microsoft has also pointed out that the new Office, with the cloud at its core, will provide a satisfactory user experience not just on a PC but also on tablets, both Surface RT and Surface Pro.

In addition to SkyDrive, you can even stream and launch a temporary Microsoft Office copy of any individual Office application without having to install it permanently, thanks to the innovative Office on Demand feature. With this you can access all your recent Office presentations, documents and sheets and on closing, no record of the application or your data will be left on the temporary system you use. So far experts and analysts agree that Microsoft has greatly simplified and improved the overall user interface and got rid of all that was confusing or cluttered.

On purchasing Office 2013, you will be able to install it on up to five PCs, both Windows and Mac. But it will only run on Windows 7 and later. Microsoft’s revolutionary new Office 365 will give users universal access to their applications with the power to collaborate, share and communicate, all within a single industry-standard productivity suite. In short, as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer believes, Microsoft Office 2013 is designed not as a product but as a service.

Internet Explorer still holds the largest market among internet browsers. Although Internet explorer doesn’t have much plugins as does Mozilla Firefox, it has some very handy features by default. Like you can view any Office file – Word, Excel or Powepoint file right into the browser and you can even edit it there. This is a useful feature but some people may not like it. Here’s how you can prevent Internet Explorer from Opening Office documents in the browser itself.

There are two ways to do it. Microsoft has released a fix for this. Simply download this Fix for Opening office files with the appropriate application and install it to apply.

Another way is the manual way. You will need to modify your Folder Options to configure Internet Explorer to open office files(.doc, .xls or .ppt) in the respective program. Open “My Computer” and go to Tools>Folder Options from the menubar. Now click on File Types Tab. Under File types tab, you’ll see “Registered file types” list. Now click on the appropriate file type for example DOC for Microsoft word documents and click Advanced. This will open up the dialogue box “Edit File Type”. Remove the tickmark from “Browse in Same Window” and click OK. Do this for all Office Document file types and you’re done.
Internet Explorer Open Office Files in Word, Excel
So, you can easily make Internet Explorer open the Office files with the respective applications rather than in the browser itself. If you want to revert back to opening such files in the browser itself, just put a tickmark to the “Browse in same window” as discussed above and click OK.

How to filter documents and photos in Gmail https://techattitude.com/how-to-filter-documents-and-photos-in-gmail/ https://techattitude.com/how-to-filter-documents-and-photos-in-gmail/#comments Sun, 24 Oct 2010 09:42:49 +0000 http://techattitude.com/?p=1618 Sorting emails containing documents, pictures or other files would be easier if they could be filtered into respective folders as soon as they reach your inbox. Using Gmail Filters, you can filter emails containing documents into a “Documents” folder, the ones containing pictures to “Images” folder and the like, making it easier for you to search through them.

Sending and receiving emails could be a part of daily life of people who spend their time on the internet regularly. Important documents, pictures or other confidential files are also sent via email as attachments. Sorting emails containing documents, pictures or other files would be easier if they could be filtered into respective folders as soon as they reach your inbox. This feature is found in Hotmail by default. Using Gmail Filters, you can filter emails containing documents into a “Documents” folder, the ones containing pictures to “Images” folder and the like, making it easier for you to search through them. You can categorize your emails that contain attachments or labels like Documents, Pictures or other files as soon as they arrive your Inbox. For convenience filter all emails containing Office files to a folder called Documents. To do this, login to your Gmail account and click on Settings, from where you can also customize themes in Gmail. Now click on the “Filters” tab. Next, click on “Create a new Filter”. In the “Has the words” section, type the following:

filename:doc OR filename:ppt OR filename:xls

gmail search command This won’t work for files created with Microsoft Office 2007 or later versions. For that create another filter with the following search command or append the search command to the one above.

filename:docx OR filename:pptx OR filename:xlsx

Now click on the “Next Step” button. Now you’ll be asked to choose an action for the messages containing these attachments. Put a tickmark on “Appy the Label” option and create a New Label from there called “Documents” (or anything you like). Apply this filter to the emails already in your Inbox as well through an option on the same page and finally save your filter. Now whenever any email containing an office file arrives to your Inbox, a “Documents” label is automatically applied to it and you can find all such emails by opening your “Documents” label.

You can also filter the documents separately i.e. by applying different labels to .DOC, PPT or XLS files. To do that, create separate labels like “Word”, “Excel” etc. and use the code given above without using “OR” (“OR” is used to search for messages containing a term A or term B). For example, to filter Word files use the following command.

filename:doc

For both doc and docx files, use the following,

filename:doc OR filename:docx

Similarly, you can also filter images into labels. For that, repeat the same process as above, replacing the file extension with JPG, GIF and PNG in the “Has the words” section. The following will work for images.

filename:jpg OR filename:gif OR filename:png

If you need to categorize E-books that are generally in PDF or LIT format, replace file extension with PDF or LIT in the “Has the words” section.

Thus by using Filters, you can easily categorize or filter your Document and Pictures into Documents, or Pictures folder(label) as soon as they reach your Inbox.

The latest version of Microsoft Office Excel till date i.e. Excel 2007. The extension of files created or edited with Excel 2007 are saved as .xlsx files. This kind of file is not supported by the earlier versions of Microsoft Excel i.e. by Excel 2003. This kind of file was also not supported by Google docs and you would have to convert them into older file formats. But recently they have added a feature letting you to upload Excel 2007 files.

Now when you upload a .xlsx file in Google Spreadsheets, your document is readily accepted and can be quickly edited. Google Docs can import all the cell data, formulas etc. The formatting is not preserved by the way.

Google Spreadsheets supports file extensions like .xls, .xlsx, .ods, .csv, .tsv, .txt, .tsb. The ability for uploading Excel 2007 files in google docs doesn’t mean that you can also upload Word 2007 files. Google docs has still to work on this as currently Google Documents only supports uploading of .txt, .doc and .rtf extensions. .docx is still not supported and third party applications should be relied upon to upload such files in Google Docs.

So, you can now have a greater flexibility for your Spreadsheets documents and needn’t worry about converting your Excel 2007 files to older version.

Open your Office Documents on Computer with Google Docs https://techattitude.com/open-office-documents-in-google-docs/ https://techattitude.com/open-office-documents-in-google-docs/#comments Wed, 28 Jan 2009 08:13:51 +0000 http://techattitude.com/tips-tricks-and-hacks/open-your-office-documents-on-computer-with-google-docs/ If you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, your office files like DOC, XLS etc. will automatically open up in Word or Excel. If you wish to see them on Google Docs you don’t need to upload them. You can configure your office files to open directly in Google Docs on double clicking.

If you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, your office files like DOC, XLS etc. will automatically open up in Word or Excel. If you wish to see them on Google Docs you don’t need to upload them. You can configure your office files to open directly in Google Docs on double clicking.

You’ll need Mozilla Firefox and Google Toolbar to open your documents in Google Docs. If you don’t have Firefox or Google Toolbar, download and install them.

open documents in Google Docs Once you install Google Toolbar after installing Mozilla Firefox, you will need to manipulate some Google Toolbar’s Settings such that it opens your Word/Excel Documents in Google Docs. Select “Settings” from Google Toolbars Options menu. Now in the dialogue box that appears, select “Docs and Spreadsheets” and then click on File Settings. Select the filetypes which you desire to open in Google Docs. Now also check the option “Double-click a file icon”. You can also choose to open the file on your computer with Google Docs by dragging its icon into Firefox. And the option “Click on a link to the file on a webpage” will let you open Office files in other webpages, directly into Google Docs.

To open your office files in Google Docs, simply double-click on it. Documents and Spreadsheets with extensions like RTF, XLS, ODS,DOC, CSV will open in Google Docs. The icon of such files will also be changed from Word or Excel’s icon. You can also open your Documents in Google Docs by simply dragging them in Firefox. But you cannot open a document in offline mode.

One cool thing about this is that once you open these documents in Google Docs, they will automatically be uploaded in Google Docs. But one downside to this is that the changes made to these documents in Google Docs will not appear in the corresponding documents on your hard disk unless you decide to overwrite them. Anyway with Google Toolbar installed, you can not only open your office documents in Google Docs but also upload them at the same time.

If you are a person who frequently uses word processing applications and share related files with peers, friends etc, then you are probably familiar with Google Docs. Google Docs has been a boon for those who work on creating and publishing documents and wish to access those files from any place on earth.

Due to some advanced features available on Desktop Word Processing applications like Grammar checking, suggesting synonyms on the fly and many other features, people prefer to use them first hand for writing and then upload those files to Google Docs. Even though you can directly create and open documents in Google docs, it doesn’t have the plethora of tools found in Microsoft word.  But if you work on a large number of documents, this can be painstaking. But no more. These nifty applications will help you synchronize your documents on the fly.

docsyncer Doc Syncer: This is a beta version of the software available from DocSyncer.com. After you sign up, you should grant it an access to your Google Docs account. Then you will be allowed to download this amazing document synchronizing software. Once you are on, Docsyncer starts scanning you My Documents and Desktop folders for office documents and syncs them with your Google Docs. Well the new file format of Microsoft Office 2007 namely docx will not be synchronised because Google Docs doesn’t support such files. You need to refresh the page at times to see the files uploaded. So both your computer and your Google Docs will have the same files with latest updates. You can also see revisions of the file. So isn’t it easy?

syncplicity Syncplicity: This is much similar to Doc Syncer. This is a service from GigaOM . This also syncs you offline works on computer with Google Docs. Syncplicity converts the document from Word to a compatible format in Google Docs and then syncs them instantly. It also helps you sync your photo galleries with Facebook.

openoffice.org2googledocs OpenOffice.org2GoogleDocs: This is an extension that will allow you to sync your Google Docs and Open Office documents. It can sync all of your Documents, Presentations or spreadsheets between Google Docs, Zoho, Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org. This will require Open Office installed. But you will require Java 6 for this.

So, try these applications and syncrhonise your Google Docs with other Word Processing Applications.
