Windows Live Messenger Sign In Errors
When you try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger sometimes you get MSN Messenger error codes which prevent you from signing in. Even if you try to eradicate the problem using the troubleshoot option you might not overcome it. These errors pop up because of some misfits in the system or the internet connection. Some command line based Messenger tricks and modifying some settings can help sort these out.
Error code 80048820: This MSN Messenger error code can be due to incorrect date and time or an unregistered softpub.dll. It may also result due to firewall problems or incorrect proxy settings. To solve this:
Go to internet explorer options(Tools>Internet Options). Then go to LAN settings and uncheck the box saying ” Use Proxy server for you LAN”. Next check the box Automatically detect settings.
Register softpub.dll by typing regsvr32 softpub.dll and hitting enter. Then restart Messenger.
If your Date and Time is not adjusted correctly, set correct date and time.
Check you firewall settings and make sure that your firewall doesn’t block MSN Messenger in any case.
If you are using a dial up modem then this problem can also be solved by restarting your modem.
If you recently installed any antivirus software then make sure that any of its firewall settings doesn’t conflict with Messenger. Also if the software is making any updates then try signing in by disabling the antivirus update.
Error code 80072efd: This is caused when the windows update site is blocked due to firewall, interference of proxy server with the Windows update site. To solve this:
Test your internet connection prevents you from browsing the Windows Automatic Update site. To test this click here and see if you can download the Iudient.cab file.
Configure your firewall settings and make sure that the firewall doesn’t block automatic updates. So make correct settings and try to update using windows update.
You can also try to remove the windows update detail entries from the HOSTS file. To do this navigate to this location C:Winntsystem32driversetc and open the hosts file using notepad. Remove lines that contain entries for windows update. Save the file.
Error code 80048821: This may cause if you try to sign in with a wrong or invalid email address. For example if you type names@hotmail.co.abc instead of names@hotmail.com you may probably get this MSN messenger error code. To solve this:
Check your firewall settings and make sure that it is in no conflict with the messenger.
Also check if you are typing the password correctly. The Caps Lock key might be on which results in wrong password.
Error code 8004888D: In this case if you type your username it takes a long time to whereas the password appears instantly. When you hit enter in such case you get this MSN messenger error code. This may be due to unregistered dlls and also may be due to some security settings. To solve this:

Rename registry key by running regedit with the run command. After regedit opens up go to the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoft
SystemCertificatesTrustedPublisher. Look for “Safer key” in “trusted publisher” and rename the “Safer key” and finally run windows update.
Error code 810000306: This type of MSN messenger error code shows up when there is a problem with .NET Messenger service. The servers might get down at times which may also cause this problem. To solve this:
Make sure that your internet is properly connected. If it is because of the server problems, it is solved itself within a few minutes.
