Many people go about promoting their blogs the wrong way. Using inappropriate blog promotion techniques can get you ignored by readers and even blacklisted by other bloggers. The following are some of the blog promotion mistakes to be avoided at all costs.

1. Asking random blog owners to link to your blog or post

Sending numerous emails to random blogs is not advisable. If a blog owner feels like they are being spammed, they will not want to have anything to do with you. The best approach is to take time to build a relationship by adding value to their blog.

2. Joining forums just for promotion

Forums can be a great source of traffic for your blog if used properly. Don’t join forums with the sole aim of promoting your blog. Instead, focus on furthering your knowledge as well as adding value to others. When people begin to recognize you as an authority in your niche, they will want to visit your blog to learn more.

3. Promoting all your articles in social media sites

Submitting all your posts to numerous social media sites might be seen as social media spamming. Being recognized as a spammer can have an adverse effect on your promotion campaigns. The best approach is to focus on at most five social media sites and take time to build credibility. Make sure your posts are valuable, sincere and relevant. As you promote yourself, you should also take time to promote posts written by other bloggers.

4. Creating content for search engines

There is nothing wrong with wanting to be ranked first on Google. Writing for search engines might increase your rankings, generate much revenue and attract lots of traffic. However, you won’t have a loyal readership and people will not be willing to spread the word about your blog. Make sure your content is not just about keywords, but about offering your readers information that is helpful and relevant.

5. Leaving shallow comments on other blogs

Commenting on other blogs is a great strategy for attracting readers to your blog. However, there are some people who go about this the wrong way. For instance, simply saying ‘Great post!’ or ‘Nice one!’ does not add much value to a post. Such shallow comments lack realness and sincerity, and are usually left with the sole purpose generating traffic. Therefore, when leaving a comment, make sure it is valuable, relevant and sincere.

6. Copying other people’s ideas

Some people think they will succeed if they copy what their successful competitors are doing. This is a big mistake. The best way of succeeding as a blogger is by standing out from the rest. Find out what others are doing and create your own style and identity.

7. Cluttering your blog with social media widgets

Some blogger make the mistake of having numerous social media widgets on their blog sidebar. These will only end up annoying and frustrating your readers. It is advisable to display a minimum number of widgets so as to allow your readers to focus on the content.
