On 31st January 2009, Google Search had shown a serious error where it added “This site may harm your computer” to every search result. This Google Malware lasted for about 15 minutes. Google has given a clarification for that.

Google explains its Malware to be due to a Human Error. Google actually flags the sites that install malicious softwares and spams in the background while the user is using it. Google maintains the list of such sites manually or by automated methods under the criteria defined by StopBadware.org.

Google has further said that it periodically updates the list and one of the updates was released that day. While doing so, the URL of ‘/’ was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and ‘/’ expands to all URLs. When they came to know about the issue, their on-call site reliability team reverted the file thus fixing the Google Malware.

Google has apologized for this Google Malware after fixing it.
